Xifeng county in Guiyang city utilized over 295,100 mu (19,673 hectares) of forest land in the first half of 2025, generating an output value of 867 million yuan ($120.59 million).

The county has used its abundant forest resources to develop a robust under-forest economy in recent years, achieving a win-win path for ecological conservation and rural vitalization.

Mushroom cultivation: A sustainable income source

In Li'an village, villagers wander beneath the pine forests to harvest red pine mushrooms, a high-value edible fungus that has become a new income driver. Planting red pine mushrooms not only enhances soil quality but also keeps trees growing healthily.

Beekeeping: A sweet industry blossoms

Pingshang village has become a hub for forest beekeeping. With an ideal altitude and rich nectar sources, over 560 hives of honeybees were placed under trees. The Nanshan Flower Sea Apiary, launched in 2017, now helps over 200 local households make a living by producing beeswax, royal jelly, and other products, which are sold nationwide.

Free-range chickens: Building a green economy

In Tianxing village, chickens roam freely under pine trees, feeding on insects and herbs. Two local cooperatives have established 80 mu of under-forest chicken farms, raising over 3,000 green-shell egg-laying hens. Annual egg sales now exceed 1 million units, benefiting more than 30 households.
