Xifeng county in Guiyang, Southwest China's Guizhou province, is set to establish 100 more 5G base stations in 2021, covering all the districts, towns, and industrial parks in the county. According to a Feb 20 announcement by the Xifeng county bureau of industry and information technology, the local government also plans to transfer its 5G base station centers to 10 towns and industrial parks.

Meanwhile, the government will concentrate on broadening the applications of 5G, exemplified by smart lampposts and national digital villages. Local internet service providers are encouraged to explore more 5G-related telecommunication business. In addition, the communication sector is being advised to innovate its operation models and to popularize consumer products such as intelligent terminals and smart furniture. Xifeng county is also committed to building a big data demonstration center during 2021.

The county already accomplished significant progress in 2020. More than 80 million yuan ($12 million) was invested on building 107 5G base stations, which has created a communication network that covers main urban districts and industrial parks. Moreover, smart devices and platforms have been applied to fields of transportation, medical services, education and finance. One example is "Tongcuncun", an online transport platform that has more than 14,000 users and sends over 200 car-related messages to villagers on a daily basis.

The wide use of mini-programs like Guizhou Health Code and Travel Pass during the COVID-19 pandemic indicated how big data was helping the government to monitor the health conditions and whereabouts of citizens to safeguard their lives.
